With all the art speak about it is always good to have the artists speak for themselves...of course sometimes they contradict what you may have heard them say at that opening years ago, but even so I'd rather speak for myself about my own work, the majority of the time, whilst I am still on this earth to do so, then to have a critic or reviewer take a stab at it! I'll never forget an Art History Conference I attended many years ago where a photo art historian, who obviously had spent little time in the dark room, went on and on about how amazing photograms were and how mysterious. Sure, they are visually special but I do them as the second project with my year 1 photo students. They do really unique and creative stuff, after all they are artists in the making...and most have never done a darkroom experience before, especially camera-less picture making, but it really is a very simple idea.So here is a pretty special book as along with a few choice words from the artists you have some pretty spot on reproductions of a few of their works. In most cases the photographers seem to have been wisely chosen whose with contributors to the media who will be recognized once they have left the planet, unlike some books with images that grace coffee tables but few walls and fewer yet substantial collections.I purchased this for my students and I think it is going to be a favourite with that spot on the bookshelf frequently empty!Rita DibertHOD PhotographyQuay School of the ArtsWhanganui UCOL, Whanganui, New Zealand
